My first author's assemblies were held October 2nd and 3rd, 2014 at Half Day School and Laura B. Sprague Schools in Lincolnshire, Illinois where I worked for 25 years. By all accounts, the assemblies were amazing!
The students were receptive and engaged in the assemblies. The teachers had extremely supportive things to say about the assemblies. Dr. Christy Adler, the principal of Laura B. Sprague School, told me that at least ten teachers came into her office and reported to her that they thought my assembly was the best author's assembly that they had been a part of in their entire teaching careers! And my book sold over 250 copies!
The children drew wonderful and imaginative drawings about what they thought happened at school when they weren't there. I chose my favorites for special recognition during the assemblies. It was very difficult because they were all so good!
The older children wrote their own poetic verses about the same topic. I also chose favorites from their entries. Great writers!
Soon I will post pictures from the assembly here. Keep checking back!
Dr Adler wrote this poem for me and placed it in a book filled with teacher's kind messages to me:
Ed Denecke, I'm proud of you,
Your dream ... an author, it has come true!
Your years at Sprague are an inspiration,
Your book is evidence of your dedication!
The words on the pages, the story comes alive,
Into the classrooms and hallways we dive!
Turning the corners and looking for bees,
Was that an elephant I heard sneeze?
You've given us a gift, imagining our school,
When we go to sleep, what comes alive is so cool!
Goldfish and monkeys, birds, ants and snakes,
Was it an elephant who ate up the cake?
Sharing your story with us ... Thank you, Ed,
Can't wait for the next ... now what's in your head? :-)
So now can you tell why I LOVED being a janitor in District 103?
It was because people like Dr. Adler worked there with me!!
